week4--amysol

today i shall do a spot light on Amy from www.amysol.com

since i am unable to show you any of her picture here (due to the fact her website is a flash website and i have no way of linking to the exact picture) i shall discuss her pictures in general and my fascinations with them and what i believe is special about her works.

the most obvious thing that struck out to me most is the fact she painted many of her paintings on plywood. therefore many of her pieces have the wavy textures characteristic of wood on the backgrounds, giving it a very unique look.

another signature technique she uses is her colour palette. consisting mainly of greys  whites and browns and many other muted colours, it is instantly interesting. her desaturated colours are also complimentary of the wood textures she uses, hence the whole piece of art bind together to form an awesome piece.

her work is mainly based on whimsical animals and females. one point that struck out to me was the fact she sometimes used the wood textures on her subject as welll as the backgrounds, hence it would give the subject a nice pattern. an example that comes to mind was how she made some seal like animals have wood textures on their body. she added faint washes of shadings on the sides and instantly made the animal pop out and become more realistic.

the female in her paintings normally have a serene and calm maybe even sad look on their faces. she utilises alot of patterns such as patterned plants in the background, or the patterns on the female's clothes. although the paintings normally look generally flat, but there are some shadings which bring out the subject more.

the composition is normally surreal with the patterned foliage and some animals accompanying the female character. it gives viewers a calming feeling and appeals for me to look more closely at the tiny and subtle details.

for a better feel of what i am talking about i suggest you enter amy's world for yourself and view her many wonderful piece at http://www.amysol.com/
