week 9- TeaPartyGirl

today i would be featuring a talented oil painter from Canada. aged 21, Sarah has already found her own unique style distinct by the skin tones and smoothness of her work.

Let Go by ~TeaPartyGirl on deviantART
this is one of her many acrylic and oil works, here we can see her attention to detail on the face in particular. as we can see with most of her works, she likes to place great amount of focus on the faces of her subject, often using them to depict certain emotions.

Mom's Bday Gift by ~TeaPartyGirl on deviantART
here we see a painting of a goldfish with oil on canvas. unlike most of her works, the subject this time is a little fish instead of females. the brushstrokes are also more obvious contrary to her usual smooth paintings.

Tip of the Iceberg by ~TeaPartyGirl on deviantART
this is one of Sarah's conceptual works. i like her conceptual works quite a bit as they often depict very interesting view points which i normally would not think about. i like the colours used here as the red and oranges int he sky contrast the blue of the water. using solid black with yellow outlines on the hair of the lady makes it very distinct to her style, the smooth gradients of colour on the females skin is also very distinct to Sarah's style.

Sarah's style is very much distinct, and utilises the oil paint's ability to blend to the fullest. we can see more of her works at her gallery which you could go to by clicking the link at the top of the post.

week 8- shimoda7

today i shall be featuring an artist from deviant art once again
http://shimoda7.deviantart.com/

he is very much popular on deviant art, but for obvious reasons as we can see in his art.

Dancer by *shimoda7 on deviantART
from this piece we can see the creativity of his work. he uses the crumpled edge of a paper to make the dress for the ballerina, the tonal values in his work are so precise you feel they are actual black and white pictures which he took.
i especially like how he had done the creases on the paper, the lines and crumpled effect brings about a 3D dimension to the piece, you can just see this on your table popping out like this.

Less is more by *shimoda7 on deviantART
here we can see his colour pencil works. once again such an amazing piece, the attention to detail is unbelievable. we can see the different depth and focus of the picture, much like how a photo would look blurred in the back ground and sharp in the front, this drawing is able to clearly depict it. the colours are also spot on. i think the water droplets on the grass just brings on more depth to the picture, and makes the drawing more interesting. the drawing is also so detailed that we can see each vein on the blade of grass.

Lost by *shimoda7 on deviantART
here we see another piece by the artist.
this thime this was done on black paper with white pastels, something we have done before in class. i am once again awed by his attention to detail, the shadows and highlights really bring out the whole image, like the rest of his gallery, it can be considered "picture perfect".

to see more of his works, click the link at the top of the journal, i hope you guys have enjoyed this little feature.

first off happy chinese new year to all you guys out there, hoping all had a happy celebration.
so in the spirit of chinese new year i shall feature some amazing artists.

today i shall feature Pretty-As-A-Picture from deviant art.
she is a young emerging photographer, also known as Nirrimi.
she is 15 years old living in australia and an amazing photographer!

Fairy Dust.XxX by ~Pretty-As-A-Picture on deviantART
here you can see her recent piece. even though she lacks her favourite camera (named boo) she has also been able to produce amazing pictures such as this piece. i especially love how the sparkles in the background are crystalised and blurred, leaving the face in focus. the makeup on the models face is only heavy around the eyes. the blue eyeshadow compliments the dots of blue in the background. the strong makeup on the eyes bring attention to the models expression, this along with her hand gesture gives her a look of "awe" and in some sense sadness. the dirty blond hair of the model goes with the overall colour scheme of the photo, the dull brightness.

Still Half Awake.XxX by ~Pretty-As-A-Picture on deviantART
yet another piece from Nirrimi. this time it is a self portrait of herself. i like the clours in this piece alot, how the slight pinkiness of her skin compliments the cool blue of her shirt. her eyes are an amazing greenish blue and the eyelashes frame her beautiful eyes wonderfully, drawing attention to the captivating eyes. her pink glossy lips are complimented by the details of her pink hoop earring, this brings in contrast of shapes. half her face is cropped, this gives the viewer a sense of mystery, what is behind that beautiful face?

Behind Blue Eyes.XxX by ~Pretty-As-A-Picture on deviantART
this photo by nirrimi is another of my favourite. the colours and the focus are the strong point in this picture. the white gauze covers her face leaving her pair of beautiful blue eyes. this gves the viewer a sense of mystery. the background is the same shade of blue as her eyes, this compliments it and frames the picture.

Hiding Behind A Smile.XxX by ~Pretty-As-A-Picture on deviantART
although this is not one of her best pictures in my opinion, i like the concept behind it. how everyone always puts up a smile just for the camera and to please everyone else when inside you are screaming and waiting to let go. the idea of using a slip of paper to express her "inner thoughts" is really interesting.

i shall come to the end of this little feature. i hope everyone enjoyed nirrimi's photo as much as i did!

Greek masterpieces from the Louvre

last Saturday we visited the Greek masterpieces with the school

these Greek masterpieces were imported from the Louvre-- a prestigious museum made famous(in my opinion) through the book "The Da Vinci Code", but that’s not what we would be talking about today.

the lourve is famous for their many exhibits and the national museum was ecstatic to be able to loan artifacts for exhibitions in Singapore. most of the exhibits were seldom seen together due to the categorization at the louvre-- they placed heavy artifacts such as sculptures on the first floor while lighter objects such as vases were placed on higher levels.

on walking into the exhibition area we were brought into the world of ancient Greece, we viewed many sculptures that were taller than us and we were able to see how intricate some of the sculptures were.
some sculptures were flat and "2D" as they were carved onto a slate of stone instead of "3D" where you could walk around the whole sculpture and view it from many different angles.

the exhibit showed us how the people of Greece lived in ancient times, how sports were an important part of their lives ( hence the start of the Olympics?) and how small a role females had at the time. we could even see how funerals were decorated at the time.

we were also exposed to many Greek myths as ancient Greece had carved almost everything with Greek myth stories as they believed deeply in the gods such as Zeus and Aphrodite. I personally enjoy Greek myths a lot so it was pleasing for me to be able to see their "first versions" and not the illustrations we normally see in books. I was actually quite disappointed that Aphrodite then was not pictured the way she is now. it just goes to show how beauty is in the eyes of the beholder

the Greek goddess Aphrodite was even given a special place in the whole exhibit where they placed all her statues. I personally liked this section most as the sculptures here were very intricate and much more detailed than the rest of the exhibit. there were even special techniques used such as carving wet cloth on Aphrodite. this was especially amazing as you could feel a wet material clinging to her body yet you know it is all made from the same piece of stone.
