Affandi and his art (II)

Affandi was greatly influenced by Van Gogh in his work.
we can see the similarities through:
- Affandi’s use of rough brushstrokes which is similar to that of Van Gogh’s
- they both like to do self portraits which reveal their emotional state
- they both enjoy including strong emotions in their work
- they both drew realistically in the earlier part of their lives (potato-eaters by Van Gogh and mother by Affandi)
- they both concentrated on individual expressions
- they both used exaggerated colours which were unnatural
- their works usually have a raw form to it, unpolished areas and unfinished patches
- they both drew commoners, peasants and poor people from the lower hierarchy
- thy both pioneered unconventional techniques (Affandi pioneered mixing paint on the canvas with his bare hands, Van Gogh pioneered post impressionism)
- they both mixed colours directly on the canvas
- their brush strokes are bold and wavy
- they often did spontaneous painting where they drew the instant they had inspiration
the objectives of Affandi’s works were:
- to portray the daily suffering and events the poor have to go through
- he wanted to prove to the world that Indonesian art is just as modern as art from other countries, had strong visions of art in society
- to draw his family
- to portray emotions
- to satisfy the calling of his soul as he feels he needs to draw, just for the plain reason that he needs to
- he wanted to prove to his parents that, contrary to their belief, being an artist is not useless. This shows his determination
- he wants to show his feeling towards humanity, empathizes with the people
- relied on his observation and sensitivity to the people around him
- used recurring themes to emphasize his ideas (e.g. war, suffering)
- he wanted to remind the world that it was not a perfect world out there, but one filled with the harsh reality of life

Affandi and his art

upon reading some readings of affandi, i saw how his works were strongly unique and emotional, which was very similar to the characteristics of Van gogh's work. he was borned in Indonesia, where he spent most of his younger half of his life self studying art. he had used pastels and crayons to create naturalistic compositions in the beginning before he started using watercolour impressionistic compositions and oil for his naturalistic compositions.

i find his oil works most appealing as they are very expressive, abstract and filled with emotions. the style is unique and the technique he used, smearing the paint directly on the canvas and using his finger tips and hands instead of brushes, impressed me alot. it fully shows us how materials do not make an artist, it is instead the technique and idea that really matters.

as we can see in the above image, affandi had applied his paints daringly and boldly, concentrating on his work and letting his creativity and emotions take hold of him while he painted. the painting above, self-portrait, is one of his more famous works, it depicts and old man with unkempt hair and messy features. the red and yellow tones of the face make it contrasting with the green of the background. the brush stokes are made up of his characteristic swirls of paint.

on reading another article extracted from the article "Affandi and me" we saw how determined he was when he did his paintings. he dipped his hands in turpentine and smeared them on the canvas, followed by using the tubes of paint to make a few strokes on the canvas. he gradually drew the outlines and smeared the paint with his hands, all the while not using any brushes.

"his tempo was moderato, not fast or slow, but very sure." was how the author had described how he worked while he painted,"he entered a trance (as he got more involved with the painting)". he also begins to sweat as his concentration built up which confirmed to the author that his mannerism (trance like appearance) was genuine, and not just an act. after painting the painting , affandi is often exhausted.

Human Macro Photography

hello readers!
So today i shall discuss something pretty out of the box, since we normally discuss and study about the olden art styles such as impressionism, pop art, post impressionism etc. I personally am not an intense fanatic of these styles, and prefer to explore some of the more common styles we see around us in art communities.

As such i shall be drawing reference from art communities such as www.deviantart.com , which coincidentally is one of my favourite haunts on the scary world of the Internet.

well, what is the art style we shall explore today you ask? It's macro photography! its commonly known as close ups of certain objects, such as insects, flowers, an eye etc. Today i shall be focusing more on human macro photography, hence the title.

below i shall have show examples of my few favourite photos.

Eclipse Of My heart by *BatDesignz on deviantART

this piece gives a sense of purity, with the pale skin of the models face, her long eyelashes and the reflection in her eye is greatly emphasised.
What really attracts me most about macro photography is the fact that we are able to see every single simple detail we would normally not take note of. Eyelashes seem like such simple, plain, even boring, part of our human body, yet when taken in such a photo it serves as a frame for the reflection in the eye.
The idea and concept used in this picture also amazes me. It would not be unusual to find many eye's in human macro photography, however finding a photographer who takes time to find the perfect angle such that the reflection of an object would be able to fall on the small area of an eye seems like a humongous feat, not to mention alot of hard work!

this piece is very striking and has placed 2 absolutely different part of the body together in one photo. this is a technique commonly used in many photographic works these days.
Unlike the previous piece, this piece relies heavily on the make up to bring out the effect we see here. the red lipstick is used on the lips to accentuate them, add in the shiny stars, our attention is caught on the piece.
In the 2nd photo we can see the same colour scheme used on the makeup around the eye. the eyelashes were pulled up to mimic the grooves on the lips. the model's blue eye also really contrasts with all the red and gold in the make up, therefore not allowing the make up to over power the natural beauty of the model.

this is another photo which is very much different as compared to the ones above. this one really relies on the simplicity of light and dark, positive and negative, contrasts in the colour, and simple silhouettes of the models. unlike the ones above, this photo needs not use details, or colours to appeal to the masses. the contrast alone seems to capture our attention. somehow i feel this looks alot like one of those optical illusions, " do you see a vase or 2 faces"

well i think much was said in this very first post, so i shall leave you some images to enjoy. i must say i am by far no expert at photography, i am simply one who got addicted to human macro photography, especially eyes. i hope you have enjoyed reading this post!

welcome to my art journal!

hello readers,
welcome to my art journal!
This blog has been created to function as an easy and trendy way to do my AEP homework. Basically things posted here would be a discussion of anything art, and if possible i may get a tag board up so we can discuss among ourselves, it will be very much dependant on what my teacher thinks, if needed this place will get a whole new makeover!

aren't we all excited now? However i think i have to keep my grammar and such intact since this IS graded.

well lets get on with our very first "discussion" shall we....
